Fungi Walk

BC Truffle Festival

Generally, when truffles come up in conversation, visions of pigs on leashes waddling through the forests of Southern France are conjured in the mind. One wouldn’t imagine British Columbia as a hot spot for these earthy fungal treasures. This is something The Truffle Association of British Columbia is hoping to change. The BC Truffle Festival is tasked with bringing awareness to the ever growing truffle industry that is present on the West coast of Canada. Running alongside Macchi and Dexter—two of British Columbia’s most well known truffle dogs—we galavanted through a local orchard—Below the Oaks Farm—producing Tuber borchii or more commonly known as the Bianchetto truffle. What a pleasure it was to see how these dogs work. Armed with their incredible sense of smell and directed by their owners, Macchi and Dexter were able to locate numerous truffles growing right beneath the surface of the orchard. What a pleasure it was to photograph this year’s BC Truffle festival.

Metchosin Mycoblitz 2017

November has made its way around once again and I found myself in Metchosin for another Mycoblitz. With Southern British Columbia experiencing a colder and drier than usual fall, we were unsure of what we would find in the forests around Metchosin. To our surprise and delight, there was still plenty of fungi to be found. Psilocybe pelliculosa (Conifer Psilocybe) and Auriscalpium vulgare (The Earpick Fungus) were some notable collections that made their way into our baskets. Until next year!
